What parents need to know

Ease of play

This app is more like a virtual toy than a game and as such has no structured goals or objectives. It is up to the individual player to do whatever he or she wants with it. Players get to create their own jelly mold using all manner of colored gelatin and mix-ins. The process includes everything from picking a mold and ingredients, to tilting the device to pour in the jelly, and then playing with the creation when it's complete. It's easy for anyone to pick up and play.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Jelly Doodle is a basic app designed mainly for very young users. It would even be appropriate for users who have never played with an app before. The touchscreen controls are very responsive, and there are no complicated gestures or movements needed to get the full experience. However, there is no structure to it so older players may not have much interest in it.

What's it about?

Jelly Doodle has a very basic premise -- kids are tasked with filling a jelly mold with the correct mix of ingredients. This process involves using various mobile phone controls, including tilting the phone, tapping the touchscreen, etc. The game also ensures that kids follow directions appropriately, e.g., so they do not overfill the mold. This is designed for a young audience, primarily for those who have had limited exposure to mobile devices.

QUALITY

For what this app is designed for, JELLY DOODLE hits a home run. It is made with a very young audience in mind, with a simplistic idea and presentation. With the intuitive motion controls -- e.g., tilting the device to pour the jelly into the mold -- and the basic touchscreen gestures to select the ingredients and make the mold bounce around when it's complete, virtually anyone can use this app to its fullest extent. That being said, its fullest extent is not very extensive, so more seasoned app users will find little to hold their interest.
