What's It About?

In RIDGE RACER SLIPSTREAM, you drive sports cars in a series of closed-street races. The idea is: The more you win, the more money you earn. That also results in better cars you can buy and more options to upgrade them, thus you win even more races.

While this arcade racing game has tons of options for race fans, it also has an odd steering quirk that might annoy some would-be drivers. Like its console counterparts, Ridge Racer Slipstream is an arcade racing game where you drive street legal sports cars in events held on closed streets. As you progress, you can not only buy better parts and perks for your ride, but also new and improved cars. But while the controls are simpler and more forgiving than in a racing simulation game, they do have one odd aspect. Even though you're driving a sports car, the car doesn't take tight turns very well. As a result, you have to drift around them, which means tapping on the brakes and essentially skidding around the turn. The thing is, mastering this mechanic can be tricky, even with four solid control schemes available in-game. But if you don't figure it out, you won't make it very far, especially since the competition is fierce -- and if you blow one or two turns, you're basically out of the running. Still, if you are able to skid with precision and are looking for a challenge, Ridge Racer Slipstream is a solid arcade racing game.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about road safety. This game has you driving faster than you ever should on the road, but does playing it show why you should obey the rules of the road?

  • Talk about physical attraction as a motivator. Why do you think this game is hosted by a beautiful (though virtual) woman? Who do you think the game developers are trying to appeal to?

  • Discuss money management. Why is it important to be mindful of how much money you spend in a game like this, especially one where you can earn money from doing well or by watching ads in it?
