A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn the basics of brushing their teeth with StarTeeth. Although the app gives a thorough explanation with tips about brushing teeth, the instructions are not read aloud, so parents will need to go over this text with younger kids. Kids can follow a character and brush with a timer, so they'll know they've brushed for a good amount of time. The characters switch up which teeth they brush so kids should follow suit, but the characters don't incorporate the other tips given in the text, so parents should remind their kids of those. StarTeeth is a good starting point to get kids brushing correctly.

Ease of Play

The app is very intuitive with clear choices to make and easy access to the brushing timer.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that StarTeeth is a health app that teaches kids the proper way to brush their teeth. Its detailed instructions and diagrams thoroughly explain the steps involved. Kids can then use the app twice daily when they brush their teeth. The timer counts down the two minutes recommended for each brushing. Kids get to choose a mate to keep them company while they brush. Mates include girls, boys, animals, superheroes, and holiday-themed characters. The mates are paired with a toothbrush that fits their theme (the cat has a fishbone-handled toothbrush, for example), and kids can also vote for future mates to be included in the app.

What's it about?

In StarTeeth, kids get to choose from 12 different characters including a cat and a gingerbread man (hey, everyone needs to brush their teeth!). The characters brush their teeth in front of a mirror so they can see what areas they are brushing. Kids follow along and brush too. Kids get two minutes to brush as well as they possibly can. Kids can tap "quit" at any time to stop brushing, and the quit button also serves to pause the timer.

Is it any good?

STARTEETH is a playful app to keep kids brushing their teeth. The instructions of how to properly brush teeth are very detailed and thorough. The app takes care of counting down the two minutes for each teeth brushing session, while kids can brush their teeth along with their chosen mate. StarTeeth combines fun with what is usually a daily chore. While the app is excellent for helping kids and encouraging them to brush their teeth, it doesn't address other oral hygiene issues, such as flossing.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Make it fun: Brush your teeth together!

  • Talk about aspects of oral hygiene such as flossing and visiting the dentist.

  • Once kids have mastered the basics and no longer need to watch the character brush, find other fun ways to pass the two minutes, such as a short song they can listen to while brushing.
