Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Sylvester's Band is a sweet and silly picture book with tons of fun interactive bits in every illustration. In the story, an unpopular raccoon named Henry tries to help out his animal friends in setting up for a big concert in the forest, but his assistance is constantly refused. When it is discovered that the concert's featured musicians are all missing, Henry sets out to round them up and save the festival. Henry is treated rather meanly in the beginning of the story, but there are good lessons in here about respecting others and understanding that everybody has value.
Is it any good?
SYLVESTER'S BAND offers kids a delightful story with incredibly appealing art (even if the illustrator is a bit loose with standard animal shapes and colors). But the interactivity is what makes it a true standout. Every page has hotspots (all hidden, none clearly marked) to tap, twist, flick, or otherwise move around. Pull leaves off of trees and toss them into the air to watch them float down, tilt your iPad to see all the paintings on a wall suddenly shift with the change of gravity, strum a banjo to hear it plink out notes. A great storybook app combines excellent story, art, and interactivity -- and that's just what Sylvester's Band does.
