A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Pages are turned by tapping arrow keys in the upper corners of the screen. Words pop out as they're read, making it easy to follow along with the text. Hints are provided to help kids figure out where to tap to find hidden interactive secrets. Kids can skip to any page via a table of contents. The interface is clunky, though, with loading time between pages and
animation that isn't always smooth. We even encountered a technical
glitch during our evaluation where one illustration didn't disappear
when the page was turned and kept re-appearing over top of other pages.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Penelope Rose HD is an interactive book that tells the story of how roses got their color, and the Penelope Rose in particular got its name. Roses used to be see-through, which caused the animals to bump into them and get pricked by their thorns until a fairy named Penelope painted them all beautiful colors. There are plenty of ways to interact with the pictures, including tilting the iPad to create a 3D effect. There is a separate, less expensive iPhone version entitled The Penelope Rose.

A fun, 3D, children's activity book for your iPad

Visually stunning. The story is very cute and the interactivity very engaging. My daughter has read it more than 4 times since we downloaded it.

Is it any good?

THE PENELOPE ROSE HD is a highly interactive app with a sweet story, competent voice acting, and "Read to Me" and "Read By Myself" features for kids of different skill levels. The interface is clunky, though, with loading time between pages and animation that isn't always smooth. We even encountered a few technical glitches during our evaluation including crashes. These technical niggles make this otherwise delightful e-book occasionally challenging to interact with.
