What's the Story?

A KNOT IS NOT A TANGLE begins with a little boy and his grandma collecting wool from his grandpa's sheep and then taking it home to spin it and dye it in various colors for a new rug to replace their worn one, which the grandma made with her own grandmother. Grandma and the boy work out a design on paper, and then they take the wool down to the basement where her loom is. She teaches him how to weave the threads and make a knot that curls around the warps. "Remember," she says, "a knot is not a tangle." When he says, "It must be perfect," she counters, "As much as we can make it so," guiding him to understand that the goal is not to be perfect but to do your best. The story concludes, "A Persian rug is an imperfect thing. But its purpose is to make a precious memory."

This warm story of family ties shows how art, culture, and tradition are handed down through generations. A Knot Is Not a Tangle is more than a tale of a grandmother's patient love for her grandson. Daniel Nayeri's text is full of teachable moments and a celebration of cherished memories of working together with loved ones to make something beautiful that will last a lifetime or more. Vesper Stamper's watercolors capture both emotion and craft with sumptuous reds, pinks, blues, greens, and yellows, creating a sunny pastoral world outside and a cozy home inside, as well as an ancient king's fanciful palace rug and Grandma's handcrafted rugs old and new.
