What's the Story?
In ALL THIS TWISTED GLORY: THIS WOVEN KINGDOM, BOOK 3, Alizeh tries to follow Cyrus on one of his mysterious trips out of the castle and finds herself lost in a tunnel when he disappears into the realm of Iblees, the devil. She's even more confused when she wakes up on the palace lawns surrounded by her Ardunian friends and Prince Kamran. And yet more confused when Cyrus arrives, Kamran starts firing arrows at him, and no one from the palace comes running to intercede. It's up to Alizeh to stop Kamran from exacting his revenge -- which is sure to get them all killed -- and she pays a serious price.
Is It Any Good?
Love is delicious agony in this twisty Persian myth-inspired fantasy, but much less delicious as readers are likely to get to the end of the story and wish much more happened. Book 2, These Infinite Threads, was also light on plot -- perhaps Books 2 and 3 should have been combined. The writing is lovely as always, and focuses beautifully on what the main characters feel and feel deeply. Cyrus' dreams of Alizeh comforting him after his run-ins with the devil are rich in sumptuous detail, lust, and longing. And Alizeh wakes up from a long illness to a whole new reality and deeply-felt conviction about her lost kingdom and her people. The problem is, those people are waiting around through all of All This Twisted Glory for her to act, and really, so is the reader. Alizeh may make some truly difficult decisions involving her suitors -- surprising ones -- but the story ends there, far too soon.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the Jinn immigrants in All This Twisted Glory. While Alizeh feels nothing but compassion for her people, one character declares that kingdoms consider the Jinns' discovery of a lost queen and subsequent mass migration a "threat to the systems of oppression." What does that mean? How does this resemble real issues involving immigrants?
Who was on Team Kamran at the beginning of the book? Who was on Team Cyrus? Has your opinion changed about the right suitor for Alizeh? Cyrus considers himself the villain that will never win the girl or live happily ever after -- is he right about himself? What books have you read where the female hero chooses the suitor you don't expect?
What do you think is next for Alizeh, Cyrus, Kamran, and friends?
