What's the Story?

ASH'S CABIN is where non-binary and misunderstood Ash believes they can finally find a place where they can live alone and in harmony with the wilderness. Family legend has it that Ash's grandfather built a cabin in a remote area somewhere beyond the family ranch where grandpa lived. Now that the family wants to sell the ranch, Ash sees this summer as their chance to find out if the cabin is real, and if they have what it takes to survive there with only their dog Chase for company. But when they meet Suzanne, another "squatter" in the wildnerness, they start to see how working together and pooling resources makes them both stronger and safer. When Suzanne has to move on to continue her own journey, Ash is on their own again and about to face the biggest dangers the wilderness can bring.

This is a lovely and lively graphic novel that captures relatable feelings of being misunderstood and struggling to find a place where you fit in. Ash's Cabin can foster empathy for feeling like a misfit when the world and people around you don't seem to have their priorities straight, and can't accept you as you are. Author and illustrator Jen Wang (Stargazing) uses beautiful watercolor earth tones that capture the yellows and browns of California's dry summers. Ash's journey is compelling and keeps the pages turning while offering a lot of food for thought about belonging, community, identity, survival, taking care of the environment, and more.
