What's the Story?
When CAT NAP begins, a young girl gets up from the couch where she's been reading a book titled Art of the World, leaving her gray kitten asleep below a framed poster advertising an "Egyptian Antiquities" exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When some scritching awakens Kitten, he sees a mouse sitting on the poster's frame and then entering the poster! "Does Kitten follow? Of course he does" becomes the refrain as Kitten continues the chase through the museum and its various artworks and interacts with figures in the art. In each section of the museum they pass through, Kitten and the mouse take on the form of the art they enter—from an Egyptian tomb panel to a medieval manuscript to a Mexican clay sculpture to African masks and so on. When Kitten gets lost, a friendly monk on a painted 14th century Italian altarpiece advises him to listen for signs of home. Kitten hears the "Skrit! Kurr-ITTCH! Tink!" of his dinner bowl. "Just like that, Kitten knows exactly where home is." He leaps all the way back to where he started, through the ancient Egyptian tomb door and through the poster into the shadow-filled room with the couch ... and happily finds his dinner waiting for him.
Is It Any Good?
This delightful, playful cat-and-mouse journey through art history is a fun way to introduce kids to art, archeology, and museums. Cat Nap is a kid-friendly romp with amazing art recreated in various media by Caldecott Honoree author-illustrator Brian Lies. Its tantalizing premise lets readers imagine breaking through time and material barriers to engage with art as easily as if meeting passers-by on a crowded street. It's an amazing achievement grounded in simple, relatable humor and innocence.
