What's the Story?

Spy kids Paris, Sydney, Brooklyn, Kat, and Rio, along with mentor/adoptive father named Mother, head for the CITY OF THE DEAD -- the ancient tombs of the Pharaohs in Egypt -- to investigate what may be an illegal business in stolen artifacts and might be something much more sinister. But first, they have to break into the British Museum on Guy Fawkes Day. As the kids struggle with the challenges of spycraft as well as the day-to-day issues of being a blended family, there's something new and unexpected to deal with -- the return of Mother's long-lost, abducted son, and the question of whether to trust him.

Never a dull moment as the MI6 spy kids delve into the London Underground and the tombs of the Pharoahs in a tale steeped in myth, history, code-breaking, and the challenges of being a family. Investigating possible traffic in looted artifacts is the challenge that takes Paris, Sydney, Brooklyn, Kat, and Rio to the City of the Dead, but they've also got another challenge as their adoptive father's long-lost son reenters the picture -- and it's not at all clear whether he can be trusted.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how City of the Dead handles the theme of spying and its personal and ethical dilemmas. Why is spying such a popular theme in storytelling?

  • Have you ever seen ancient Egyptian artifacts, like those from King Tutankhamen's tomb, in a museum? What did you think? Did they make you wonder about how people lived in those times?

  • How do you decide whether or not you can trust somebody? Have you ever trusted someone you shouldn't have -- or mistrusted someone you shouldn't have? What happened, and how did it turn out?
