I liked this book a lot. I could hardly put it down. I did have a little bit of a problem with the ending though. It all came together way too fast. Lauren Kate kind of drops the reality of it all at once there in the end.
There wasn't exactly a lot of positive messages, but there wasn't a bad messages either. It does get iffy who is the good guy and the bad guy by the end though. The characters are flawed and relatable which I loved, and the writing really showed their individual personalities well.
There is a good bit of violence. There are three deaths of innocent mortals, and a few fights. The first are just punching, kicking, head banging, and that sort of the thing. The last involves someone's throat being slit with a knife, angels fighting one another, and someone trying to sacrifice another. There are also these dangerous, creepy shadow things haunting the main character.
The book revolves around romance, but it is tastefully written and not extremely heavy. The main character falls for two different guys. There's a variety of kisses, some heavier than others. Mostly it's just focused on the main character's passion and feelings though.
It really is a good book. I loved the mystery and feeling of it all. I also found the romance engaging because it was filled with deceit and confusion and many mixed emotions. The details were described perfectly, and it left me on the edge of my side until the a little overwhelming end.
