What's the Story?

In FEARLESS: POWERLESS, BOOK 3, Paedyn is thrown for a loop when King Kitt offers her his hand in marriage. So is Kai, Kitt's brother, who is in love with Paedyn and wants them to be together. Paedyn goes along with the engagement because of what Kitt offers her: a way to unite the Elites who possess magical powers and the Ordinaries like her who have been systematically killed for decades. But no one in the kingdom will accept her as an Ordinary queen, so Kitt decides to prove Paedyn's worthiness with another Trial just for her. Three tasks await her, each one deadlier than the last, but still the hardest trial is giving up Kai before her wedding day.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 10 ):
Kids say ( 32 ):

The one consistent thing about this magic-powered romance-heavy trilogy is its ability to disappoint on every level. It has the necessary elements of a good romantasy: a haters-to-lovers smoldering affair and a curious kingdom where the magically powerful persecute the nonmagical (Ordinaries, not muggles). Here's how the romance disappoints: Paedyn is engaged to the king and keeps up a relationship with his brother Kai and barely seems to feel any conflict about it. Here's how Kai disappoints as the not-so-secret boyfriend: When Paedyn is sent to the desert to rob a grave and most likely get killed by bandits, he's a bit worried but otherwise OK with it. There are many examples of baffling and contemptible behavior that are just accepted. Like a major deception in the third Trial orchestrated by the king that is so horrendously manipulative and cruel, yet Paedyn just seems to get over it. The wedding is still on, people! Twists and turns abound by the end, but only twist and turn the story into a knot of melodrama Fearless didn't need. What it needed instead was clear plotting and actions of characters that make sense.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about whether the characters are likable in Fearless. How did you feel about Paedyn's affair with the brother of her betrothed? How about when Kai goes along with Paedyn's involvement in the Trials? Do characters need to be likable or admirable for you to enjoy them in a story? Why, or why not?

  • Why does Paedyn drink so much champagne at the ball? What's her impression of how the night went? What do you think other members of the court thought of their future queen?

  • The Trials aren't such a good test of who would make a good ruler. What kind of trials should there have been instead?
