What's the Story?
In FOUR EYES, Rex is about to start the sixth grade. He's excited, even though he suddenly needs glasses. But his family can't afford to buy him nice new ones, so he has to settle for a pair that make him look "nerdy." In school, kids ruthlessly tease and make fun of him. How will he survive middle school?
Is It Any Good?
Rex's family are the unsung heroes of this absorbing story. Rex is a great lead in Four Eyes, but his family really stand out as loving, supportive, and real. Despite their economic hardship, Rex and his family get by, do their best, and love each other unconditionally. Rex's school life, on the other hand, feels particularly harsh, with kids left and right teasing Rex for looking like a "nerd." Rex handles his predicament like most kids his age would, and his feelings of desperation, isolation, and fear shouldn't be downplayed. Even if most parents would like to believe that most schools aren't so lax in terms of allowing such awful bullying behavior, what kids face at school and online might surprise many adults, so this story is timely, even though it's set in the 1990s. This engaging graphic novel teaches valuable lessons about family, friendship, class, and fairness.
