What's the Story?

It's fall when GATHER GRATEFUL begins, when animals are gathering food and materials to survive the cold winter. On a page showing a family of squirrels, the text reads, "Gather acorns. Gather seed./ Gather all young mouths will need." Birds gather and then fly off. Skunks under a house do the opposite: "Gather close. Prepare to stay." Next we see a multigenerational family of humans gathering inside a home to share a meal. "Gather tables. Gather chairs./ Gather plates to pass and share. Gather stories to be told. Gather young and gather old." They continue their celebration outside under the starry night by a fire pit: "Gather round the fire bright./ Gather laughter, love. and light." Then we see a family of raccoons huddled on a tree branch watching the humans gathered inside the home: "Gather outside, gather in./ Cozy time can now begin." The final scene is of two cats snuggled by the grandmother reading a book to two kids by the fireplace.

This warm celebration of food and family draws a connection between animals and humans and focuses on fall as a time to huddle together. Illustrator Alexandra Finkeldey effectively uses red and gold autumn colors in the animal world outside and shades of blue to portray the inside world of the human family's gathering. Gather Grateful would make a perfect book to read before or at Thanksgiving—author Megan Litwin's spare poetry captures all the elements and feelings of the season. But, of course, it works as a model of simple family rituals and animal survival any time of the year.
