What's the Story?
A young child says GOODBYE SUMMER, HELLO AUTUMN on a walk through the woods to town and back. The book begins with a child in a jacket, pants, and red scarf standing on porch steps and looking out on green grass and leafy trees. As they walk, they talk to nature ("Hello, trees." / "Hello. Now that the winds have come, we love the way our branches sway in the sun"). The child walks into the woods, where foxes and birds are preparing for cooler weather, along a river where a man fishes, and into town. The walk takes them past late summer flowers blooming, leaves turning yellow, orange, and red. "The dogwood leaves turn purple," the air gets cooler, and townspeople are wrapped in sweaters and scarves. As the child returns home, they notice the sun "setting earlier," and the breeze lifts their scarf tails. Night falls ("Goodbye, Summer"), and a page turn later, a morning sun shines on thinning trees and leaves scattered in the yard ("Hello, Autumn").
Is It Any Good?
The understated beauty of this contemplative picture book captures the slide of summer into fall. Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn is packed with seasonal markers and delights (scattered, colorful leaves; cloudy skies; thunder; cozy sweaters). The call-and-response conversation between the child ("Hello, breezy wind!") and the natural features they encounter ("Hello! I love to whoosh drizzle and leaves through the streets!") makes for a soothing, musical read. This book is a visual, seasonal treat.
