What's the Story?

Over two days, a brother and sister celebrate a spring Hindu festival with family and friends in HAPPY HOLI! CELEBRATING THE FESTIVAL OF COLORS. On the first day come the preparations that include gathering sticks and wood, watching Grandma make Holi treats to eat, tidying up "our homes and streets," and picking flowers to make powders that tomorrow will "fill the air, landing on our clothes and hair." Everyone gathers for an evening bonfire and storytelling. On the second day, the colorful powders are thrown at family and friends. In addition, there is singing, dancing, and a festive lunch, all to "praise the god of love" and "send hatred far away." Holi is a time to have fun, make amends, welcome spring, and anticipate the harvest yet to come. A note at the end of the story gives more detail about Holi traditions, and a glossary of five Hindi words used in the story.
