What's the Story?

THE HEIRESS OF NOWHERE begins in August 1918 on Orcas Island, Washington. Eighteen-year-old orphan Lucy Nowhere has lived on the 1000-acre Nowhere Estate since she was a baby, found alone in a canoe that washed ashore. The estate belongs to Dakon Sanders, a wealthy yacht builder who recently promoted Lucy from kitchen work to research assistant. When Lucy tells Sanders she plans to attend the University of Washington, he stuns her with news that he's close to discovering who killed her father—if she wants to learn more, she'll have to stay. Before Sanders reveals more, Lucy discovers his severed head on the beach, murdered in the same way as the Can Man, who died 18 years ago. Sanders' will shocks everyone: he's left his entire fortune and estate to Lucy rather than his nephew Nash. A cryptic clue leads to the revelation that the Can Man was Lucy's father and to Sander's request for Lucy to avenge her father's death. Lucy's also navigating a love triangle with Koa Kāne, head of the estate's guards, and Nash, the disinherited heir. Suspects multiply, Lucy herself falls under suspicion, and the search ends in a terrifying graveyard confrontation with the killer.

There's a lot to keep readers entertained, and a lot to be sorted, in this gripping historical novel. Stacey Lee packs multiple storylines and plot twists, a big cast of diverse characters, and a long list of suspects. Heiress of Nowhere has something to intrigue and engage almost any reader. For mystery fans there are not one but two unsolved murders. The bond and interactions Lucy has with the sea wolves are certain to captivate animal lovers and for fantasy fans, there's the legend surrounding the demon spirit Orkus and the sea wolves. And, of course, there's romance; the love triangle between Lucy, Koa, and Nash. This book's a great pick for teens who like complex mysteries and historical settings.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the perseverance Lucy showed in Heiress of Nowhere. If a young woman inherited a fortune and control of a huge company in today's world, would she have an easier time than Lucy winning the respect of the people around her?

  • Do you think humans can really have deep emotional connections with animals? Have you ever had a "friendship" with an animal?

  • How important is the setting of a novel? Would you have been as engaged in Lucy's story if it took place in a big city instead of an island full of secrets in the Pacific Northwest?
