What's the Story?

In HER HIDDEN FIRE, channellers are responsible for keeping society afloat, using their power to grow crops, control the weather, keep the dragons at bay, and much, much more. Éadha has been waiting for the day her best friend Ionáin gains his magical abilities and keeps their home of Ailm's Keep from being ruled by an outsider. But when Éadha's ability to channel roars to life, she finds herself in an impossible position. Choosing Ionáin over herself sends them both away, to the academy of magic, where she must hide the extent of her own power. But as she learns the terrible price of magic, will she be able to remain silent, or will she risk everything to do what's right?

Our review:

Kids say ( 1 ):

Compelling, heartfelt, and thought-provoking, this fantasy story moves beyond the typical romantasy to explore the nature of right versus wrong. Her Hidden Fire almost reads like a fable, with a mythical feel to the world-building. The pacing and character arcs are well written, with a natural build to the story, which, while somewhat predictable, is thoroughly enjoyable. The main character is well rendered, and while the side characters often fall a bit flat, the story is quite compelling nonetheless. As this is the first book of a series, there is room for the other characters to grow in depth. The social explorations around power and corruption are handled beautifully. The book ties up nicely, leaving room for the story to continue without feeling like a cliffhanger. Overall, teens who enjoy fantasy with light romance and stories steeped in mythology are sure to enjoy this book.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the courage it takes for Éadha to lend her magic to the "fodder" in Her Hidden Fire. Do you think she realizes how much is at risk?

  • The social structure in this book is quite ancient and strict. What do you think about how shame, violence, and pleasure are used to reinforce the existing expectations?

  • Why do you think the author chose to include a love triangle in this book? Does it add to the story? How would the book change if the romance wasn't part of the plot?
