What's the Story?
As HUDA F CARES? opens, the family prepares for a trip to Disney World, 24 hours away from their home in Michigan. The girls love each other, their parents, and their religion, but Huda frets about how others see them. As they tour the parks, the sisters meet some like-minded people and some bigoted jerks, but in the end, learn lessons about family, identity, and pride.
Is It Any Good?
Writing a sequel can be difficult, but this lively follow-up hits the right notes. In Huda F Cares?, cartoonist Huda Fahmy gives the right treatment to this fictionalized memoir of what could have been a run-of-the-mill vacation tale. The closely observed themes about practicing Islam, Islamophobia, and family life creates a book that's warm, funny, and often surprising.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Huda F Cares? depicts the experience of being Muslim in America. For example, why do the girls pray in public?
Why are amusement parks such a big part of American popular culture? Are there aspects of them not in keeping with Islam? Why did Huda's parents decide Disney World was a good vacation choice for their family?
How do Huda and her sisters demonstrate the character strengths of teamwork, empathy, and self-control? They bicker, but they have each others' backs. Do you have sibling relationships or friendships like that? Why do they work?
Are there times when Islamophobia becomes more prevalent? What can you do to support Muslim communities?
What can you do to raise awareness of sexual harassment? What resouces are available to victims of harassment?
