What's the Story?

The narrator of JUST SHINE! introduces young Celina in Puerto Rico as someone who loves so bright, she lights up everyone around her. Each scene in the book shows Celina engaged in a kind act that's emphasized with a final sentence in bold font that clearly states "Celina showed her love by..." finding courage to look for her sick mother who'd wandered off in the dark, befriending an elderly neighbor who was lonely, showing empathy for a friend who acted mean, caring for her community's health needs, and so on. The end of the story describes how her kindness was returned when she was nearing death and how her "light" lives on.

This contemplative, warmly encouraging picture book charms with its clear lessons on showing love and it dream-like art. Sonia Sotomayor's story of her beloved mother is likely to spark conversations with very young readers about kindness and how to show care. The text and Jacqueline Alcántara's immersive illustrations clearly model how to pay loving attention to others, ask perceptive questions, and offer thoughtful help. Young kids will be inspired to Just Shine! and make a real difference in the world around them.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the ways Celina showed her love in Just Shine! Do you show your love in any of the same ways? If not, how do you show your love to the people you care about?

  • Celina shows a lot of empathy and compassion to others. What really stood out to you about her kindness to others? How can you be more empathetic and compassionate in your life?

  • How do the illustrations in this book help tell the story? What do the pictures tell that the words do not?
