What's the Story?
LITTLE REBELS begins with three colorful kid characters moving through vivid garden-like environments defining what it means to be a little rebel. "We show up with how we feel." "And we take all the time we need to find each other." They also create poems and make up words when they need to. And they ask a lot of questions. Eventually the three walk to a lake, taking care to make a safe path for a blue land crab to travel with them. But when they arrive, they find the lake has dried up, leaving nothing but a hard, cracked lakebed. Then their bird friend Kek falls through a crack. They rescue it and see it's got a hurt leg. They turn to their ancestors, the Abuelas Rebeldes (Rebel Grandmothers), for advice. "When we don't know how to mend the hurt, we ask those who rebelled long before us." Then the kids remember some healing techniques they've learned in life and apply those to Kek's leg. The story ends with a question to the reader: "Do you want to be little rebels together?" A turn of the page offers back matter listing "How to Be a Little Rebel."
Is It Any Good?
This lively, artful, eco adventure encourages young readers to explore and care about the natural world and its inhabitants. The first part of Little Rebels talks about what little rebels are like, what they value, and the second part shows the characters in action as they encounter a degraded natural environment. The dreamlike encounter with their ancestors toward the end may be confusing for some young readers, but an ancestor's message is comforting: "All you need is to remember." Spurred to activism after seeing the dry lakebed, one of the kids makes a sign that says "Free Waters." It's not entirely clear what that call to action is. More clear for budding activists is the notion that "side by side, we rise up." Yuyi Morales' mixed-media illustrations should keep kids entertained through all the big ideas flying by.
