What's the Story?

In MAGNOLIA WU UNFOLDS IT ALL, Magnolia Wu plans to spend her summer sitting inside Bing Qi Ling Bubbles Laundromat, where her parents work, doing chores, watching her parents fold and deliver laundry, and playing with the family dog, Mister Pants. To occupy her time, Magnolia collects lost socks and pins them to a bulletin board in hopes that their owners will see them and reclaim them. After celebrating her 10th birthday with her parents, her mother plans a playdate between Magnolia and Iris, the daughter of Ms. Lam, an old friend who just moved to NYC from Santa Cruz, California. Magnolia is skeptical as her mother doesn't have a good track record for helping her find friends, but she and Iris quickly bond, although Magnolia is offended by how much Iris misses California. After witnessing a racially-driven confrontation between her mother and a customer, Magnolia tosses out her bulletin board, feeling that it's stupid. The next day, Iris informs her that she retrieved the socks and thinks they should travel around NYC to return the socks to the owners using the socks as clues. Happy to finally have a friend, Magnolia puts her detective hat on and explores the city with Iris. While solving these mysteries. Magnolia not only learns a lot about the people that make up her community, but about herself in the process.
