What's the Story?
When MALCOLM LIVES! begins, Malcolm Little's mother is pregnant with him, defending herself and her children from threatening men who come to the house looking for her husband. That incident sets the stage for recounting Malcolm's life. His initial response to living in a world that is scary and violent for Black people is to lash out. This leads him to prison, where studying and learning set him on a path to promoting self-love, freedom, and self-reliance for Black people.
Is It Any Good?
This is a strong introduction to an important historical figure, but with one flaw to note. Strengths of Malcolm Lives!: The Official Biography of Malcolm X for Young Readers by Ibram X. Kendi are the inclusion of archival materials, such as personal correspondence between Malcolm X and his family and colleagues, and insights into Malcolm's childhood perspectives that give an intimate, relatable, and complete picture of Malcolm X's life and work. But as the author moves back and forth between the story he's telling, general commentary, and events that happen long after the icon's death, it's easy to lose sight of the overall narrative. For example, in a passage about Malcolm's trip to Gaza, there's a long digression into speculation about events during the war in Gaza that began in 2023. Despite these distractions, this is a compelling, well-researched biography that will spark family conversations about history and today's movements for equality and social justice.
