What's the Story?

MERMEDUSA begins at the one-year anniversary of the night Violet Parma climbed through Herbert Lemon's window looking for an answer to what happened to her parents. A trio of podcasters has arrived in town looking for spooky stories for their listeners. As the podcasters start to dig up secrets, Herbie and Vi take the chance to learn Eerie's Deepest Secret, hoping it will be tied somehow to their own pasts. But to learn the truth, they'll have to face the Malamander (again!), the fargazi, and the ruthless Sebastian Eels.

This fifth and final installment in the fantasy-mystery series keeps the charm, suspense, spooky atmospheres, and spine-tingling adventure going while finally answering questions and providing closure for Herbie and Vi. Colorful new characters arrive in Mermedusa, and of course our favorite quirky townsfolk are back, too. The short chapters with cliffhanger or surprise endings keep the pages turning, and Herbie's quirky, sometimes funny, and always sincere voice makes it a great choice for reading aloud.

Big kids and tweens will relate to Herbie and Violet as their friendship grows and they continue to rely on each other's strengths. Author Thomas Taylor nails the sweet ending, which wraps everything up nicely and provides a nice example of what we can accomplish when we believe in each other.

  • Families can talk about the violence and scariness in Mermedusa. When is it sometimes fun to be a little bit scared? What can you do to feel better when you're scared?

  • How do Herbie and Violet show empathy? How do courage, perseverance, and teamwork help them find answers?

  • Have you read the other books in this series? If you have, which one is your favorite? If you haven't, would you like to now?
