What's the Story?
As MISS QUINCE opens, Sue wants to spend the summer at camp with her friends -- but her parents insist that she travel with them to visit their relatives in Honduras. If that weren't enough, they plan to throw a surprise quinceanera for Sue, where she'll be the center of attention in a big, pink, poofy dress. The only one who seems to understand Sue is her grandmother, but even she can't rescue Sue from a houseful of aunts and cousins demanding quality time.
Is It Any Good?
Family members sometimes disagree on celebrations and traditions, and this touching tale extols compromise. Writer/illustrator Kat Fajado captures the kinetic energy of the story's Central American setting. And Sue is a likeable main character, gradually opening herself up to new experiences. Perfect for middle-grade graphic novel fans, Miss Quinces is a lively celebration of family life.
