What's the Story?

A young pup sees his grandfather resting in his chair and declares that PAPA DOESN'T DO ANYTHING! Papa, surprised, defends himself, showing the child that he's both practical (can open a tight-lidded jar) and fun (as a floating "boat" in the pool that his grandchild captains). He's even interesting! He has worked different jobs, flown a plane, and played in a rock band, all long before he had a grandchild. But most of all, Papa loves watching the little pup grow, learn, and experience life and is always there for the pup, proud as can be.

This loving ode to grandfathers will appeal to any young kid with a special connection to an older relative. It's easy for kids to think that a grandparent who rests, reads, and watches TV is boring. But Papa Doesn't Do Anything! reveals that Papas are whole, interesting people who've done (and still do) many small and big things that make them extra special. Papa's pride in watching his grandchild experience the world and grow, and in helping when needed, perfectly captures the unique role that grandparents play in kids' lives.

Jimmy Fallon's rhyming text is fun to read aloud, and Miguel Ordóñez's cartoon illustrations will entertain young ones. Put this book out anytime Papa visits for a warm shared reading experience.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about what Papa and his granddog do together in Papa Doesn't Do Anything! Is it all about having fun? What's special about their relationship?

  • Kids: Do you have an older person in your life you spend time with? What's great about this person? What's your favorite thing to do with them?

  • Be curious about a grandparent or other older person in your life. Ask them what their life was like as a kid and young adult. What did you learn?
