Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about why the author-illustrator of Poetry Comics chose to draw recurring characters without naming them. What effect does this have on you as a reader?

  • Even though the characters are children, we don't see many adults in the illustrations. Why do you think the author chose to do this? What might the author be saying about the inner lives of children, or how kids best learn about the natural world?

  • One of the characters we see the most often is a young girl of color. Why do you think the author chose to feature her most prominently?

  • What effect does the combination of poetry and graphic novel-style illustration have in this collection? Do you want to read more poetry like this? Why, or why not?
