What's the Story?
In the toddler book SNUGGLE PUPPY by Sandra Boynton, puppy and parent are baking cookies. The dog parent sings the puppy a little song of unconditional love: "Ooo! Snuggle Puppy of mine! Everything about you is especially fine! I love what you are. I love what you do." Meanwhile, Snuggle Puppy is shown doing a variety of kid activities: jumping into a pile of fall leaves, playing with a ball, pulling a sled. By the end of the poem, the cookies are baked, and the parent gives the puppy a big hug and kiss.
Is It Any Good?
Like Sandra Boynton's other toddler books, Snuggle Puppy creates a warm, fun feeling for children. This little love poem is cute and memorable, and the pictures are funny. Children enjoy returning to Boynton's books for their silly rhymes and entertaining illustrations, and they'll have fun pointing out simple objects and identifying different seasons and activities. The book's sweet, loving message makes it a nice Valentine's Day gift from a parent to a child.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about seasons. What does the puppy do in winter? What does the puppy do in summer? Is that what you like to do, too?
What are the puppy and dog doing while the dog sings this song?
What does the puppy like to play with?
