What's the Story?

A girl follows her sister into the sport of fencing in THE BOLDEST WHITE: A STORY OF HIJAB AND COMMUNITY. Faizah loves being part of her Black Muslim community. She also loves her fencing class but is riddled with self-doubt. More comfortable in a crowd and reluctant to stand out in practice, she worries, "Are they looking at me because I did something wrong?" Encouraged by her coach and her sister, Faizah gets added reassurance from her mother, who counsels that "bravery will grow." And it does. Also, part of the story is how Faizah and her red-haired friend Sophie plan for the holiday Eid and how Faizah shops with her mother for a new hijab for Eid and for a fencing tournament. Of course, Faizah chooses the boldest white to go with her fencing uniform. The authors provide notes at the book's end, illuminating their personal connection to Faizah's story.

This heartfelt picture book follows the story of a determined new fencer, buoyed by her Muslim identity, mosque community, caring coach, and loving family. In The Boldest White: A Story of Hijab and Community, Faizah's story touches on universal themes: accepting challenge, enjoying family and community support, overcoming fear, and becoming a humble leader. Hatem Aly's bright illustrations extend the narrative and provide important cultural and religious context. The authors' choice to focus on fencing and Faizah's family and community provides a subtle challenge of religious and gender stereotypes while also encouraging perseverance and self-respect. In Faizah's example, there is also an invitation for kids to accept and meet new challenges with pride and humility.
