What's the Story?
THE FAITH OF ELIJAH CUMMINGS: THE NORTH START OF EQUAL JUSTICE tells the story of Representative Elijah Cummings, who overcame great obstacles to become an important American leader. Elijah grew up in a low-income family, who rented a home in a segregated community in Baltimore, in the 1960s. He struggled in school, and his teachers didn't believe in his dream of becoming a lawyer. Growing up, Elijah was constantly reminded to have hope and faith in a better tomorrow, as he experienced racism and inequality. Inspired by his parents and other community leaders, he worked hard for his dream of going to college. Elijah believed, "education is the gateway for success in accomplishing anything in life," and he was right. After graduation, he became an invaluable politician and made a commitment to sharing his wisdom and strength with others to uplift the community. His legacy lives on today, within the House of Representatives in the committees and caucuses his led.
Is It Any Good?
This picture book biography is a beautiful, child-friendly ode to a memorable and hard-fought life. The Faith of Elijah Cummings: The North Star of Equal Justice helps preserve Elijah Cummings' legacy by sharing the childhood dreams and struggles of this civil rights icon. The book does not shy away from Elijah's peaceful fight for civility in the face of discrimination, segregation, and poverty. Laura Freeman's illustrations capture the reader's attention and portray emotions in a soft manner. Author Carole Boston Weatherford's decision to include direct quotes from Elijah Cummings makes the book true to his story, and leaves a lasting impression of inspiration. It's great read for the whole family, made for those who are and are not familiar with the impact Elijah had on the world.
