The House in the Cerulean Sea

A great book! It's intended for teens+, but I could see myself having loved it as a younger kid. There's only a tiny bit of swearing (damn is said a couple times, which I don't think is out of the ordinary for kids), and a few slightly dirty/risque jokes that are intended to go over kids's heads (okay, maybe some that are VERY on the nose, but...), as they do for the children in the book. It has those darker themes that any morbid kid (someone who enjoyed ASOUE, perhaps) would appreciate, but overall comes to a much more uplifting message that I feel is important to show to young kids. Themes of acceptance are often explored in children's literature, but not often to this extent.

This is an incredible, heartwarming fantasy that is now my favorite book of all time. It's so important to have accurate, positive queer representation in books-- now more than ever. I do believe that young kids can appreciate this greatly if parents read it to them and skip over what could be deemed as inappropriate language. Truly amazing!

I love this book very much! If you have a child or a teenage family member think about these things- the word damn is used a few times, and the words p*nis and v*gina are used but only once. There are a few sexual jokes but they would make no sense for children and maybe a teen. I don't recommend it for kids 10 and under just in case they have questions. A few morbid sentences but nothing terrifying or majorly concerning. There are some long words that may be difficult for children to understand but honestly its not to much. There is a romantic aspect but nothing sexual. I honestly found this book amazing and funny, sweet and it really tugged at my heartsrings. I hope this was helpful!
