This rating is only due to one part that angered me, and is honestly really out of date.
There is one part in the very beginning where the main describes Trina as “HIS” and “a girl left as scrap for him to TAKE.” Some might think this is an overreaction, but I think it is fairly important to call out this way of describing women which majorly adds to many oppressive and restraining viewpoints. Women aren’t objects, and when I saw this I was upset that Dashner said that. This is not rating the overall book, but I needed to throw that out there. This isn’t the 20th century, women aren’t items.

Good, but violent
It is definitely one of james dashners more violent books. James Dashner is an incredible author and he is very descriptive, which means fight scenes are very descriptive. It gives backstory and answered most of my questions i had from reading the original trilogy.

Really Terrible
So I have been a fan of the first 3 books in the Maze Runner series and I really enjoyed them. But this is just awful. The writing was bad and it was hard to get interested into a brand new set of characters. This honestly just felt like a complete afterthought and just a way for James Dashner and his publisher to make more money. I was just utterly disappointed in the whole thing. Plus I think everything is even more confusing when you read a PREquel AFTER you already know what's going to happen. Ugh. Don't read it.

Great, lots of violence though.
I read this a couple of years ago, and it was really violent. I have fairly thick skin for this sort of thing though, so I didn't mind. But still. Also I'm kind of disappointed about the change of characters, would've preferred an origin story for Thomas from the other books. Kind of scary as well, what with the series being about a virus that turns people into bleeding maniacs.

Fantastic Prequel- Fans of The Maze Runner Won't be Disappointed
This book is excellent. I read it when I was in Gr.6 and had no problem with it. There is a lot of violence, so kids that get scared easily might want to wait until they're older. There is very limited swearing and one or two crude jokes. Mark and his girlfriend hold hands and kiss, but nothing gross or excessive. The characters are fairly great role models and seem to react appropriately to situations. This prequel is not to missed and full of hidden background information that will excite fans of the Maze Runner! Fine for mature middle schoolers and great for teens!

Great book! Interesting to read during a real global pandemic
I read this during the COVID-19 pandemic which was very interesting. It was cool to see the comparison. I really liked this book! I like how it had more romance than the rest of the books! (But definitely not too much to make it inappropriate)

Really good, thought provoking book
The book was so good! It also explained a lot things that I was confused about in the later maze runner books. I read all the maze runner books during quarantine this year, and it really was interesting to think about how something like this could really happen, especially considering the events that have happened so far in 2020. For anyone wondering about how old you have to be to read this book, it really depends. There's not much romantic content, but there is a fair amount of violence, and it might get pretty disturbing for people who don't like to think about diseases or crazy people...because there is a lot of that going on. I would say that it's probably not ideal for anyone under 13 or 12 to read this book, but it's different for everyone. For all you star wars fans out there, and i'm not sure if anyone else thinks this, but the book SERIOUSLY made me think of the movie Rogue One, because they were both trying to do something good that(SPOILER ALERT) that ended in all of their deaths. But all in all, really great book, definitely worth reading.

This really depends on the sensitivity of you/your child.
I absolutely love this book! I was a little disappointed that Thomas wasn't a character in it, but these characters are great too!
I can't really say what age this is appropriate for, as that really depends highly on your/your child's sensitivity. It's not exactly as gory as the other Maze Runner books, but for some reason it gave me the creeps more often. That may just be me, though.
One nice thing about this book is that two of the characters are looking for weapons and instead of finding guns or knives they find two futuristic guns that make the target vanish into thin air. That REALLY eliminates some of the gore in the fight scenes, as instead of blood and all that they just vanish.
There are some scenes where the main character goes a little bonkers during a fight and gets a lot more violent then usual.
Anyway, I hope this helps! Happy reading!

WAY better than I expected!
For some reason (I don't even know why) I thought the book wasn't going to be that good, but I read it and it was AMAZING!!! Definately read this if you have read the Maze Runner series. This shows the world outside of the Maze, a ruined world. It is a really good and interesting dystopian book. It is sad and full of action and violence.
