What's the Story?
A boy and his father chop firewood and stack it neatly in THE OLD SLEIGH before hitching it to their horse and heading through town to deliver "warmth" and "light" to their neighbors. But as the town gets bigger, the pile of wood gets taller and heavier. A crack in a wood panel must be patched, then the whole sleigh breaks in two under the weight. How will the boy and his father continue the acts of service that keep their town cozy and bright in the winter?
Is It Any Good?
A deceptively simple tale is told in this lovely picture book about service, tradition, and adaptation to change: A boy and his father deliver firewood to their neighbors during the snowy season. But The Old Sleigh is about so much more. The spare text tells the on-the-surface story, while the luminous stamped illustrations deepen it, showing how the duo perseveres through harsh winter conditions to make their town "merry and bright," the warm relationships with members of their appreciative community, and the growth of the town that wears down the sleigh but doesn't stop the young son from serving his neighbors. And the shifting meanings of "warmth" and "light" from literal to figurative is a tenderly represented case study of connotations.
The only potential drawback to this gorgeous book is that it demands that readers pay attention to small details or risk losing the depth of the plot—the multiplying hilltop homes in the background, the growing wood pile, a hairline crack in the sleigh, the strip of wood that patches it, the plank taken from the broken sleigh that the boy transforms into a red-painted sled, the red sleigh a young man (the now grown boy?) uses to deliver wood in "a small city." But once these clues are spotted, a rich, charming reading experience unfolds to remind readers of the importance of traditions and community, even as change brings new challenges.
