A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this book.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that actor Channing Tatum's colorful picture book, The One and Only Sparkella, is a warm, glittery story of kids who dare to stand out with their unique qualities and the parents who encourage them to shine. After Sparkella's uncomfortable first day at a new school, she becomes plain Ella, swapping sparkle for earth tones and plain sandwiches in an attempt to fit in. Illustrator Kim Barnes perfectly captures the love and support between father and daughter, celebrating their special bond with bright colors and just the right amount of glittery sparkle. There's some challenging vocabulary for young readers (fuschia, bedazzled), and the dance sequences make for a great read-aloud story.

What's the Story?
On the first day at a new school in THE ONE AND ONLY SPARKELLA, both Ella and her dad dress in bright colors and sparkles, full of excitement but a little nervous. Her dad reminds her that she has everything she ever needs right inside her already, and she skips into school ready to share her brightness. But things don't go as planned, and the next day she trades her tutu and bracelets and fancy shoes for gray pants and a tan backpack. That night, her dad helps her see how important it is to be herself, even if that makes her stand out.
Is It Any Good?
Filled with warmth and kindness, Channing Tatum's first picture book shows an unwavering bond between father and daughter, and emphasizes the importance of showing up in the world as you truly are. The One and Only Sparkella is filled with sweet moments, especially when readers see that the support goes both ways between parent and child, and the illustrations are delightful. Sparkella wondering, "Did I sparkle too much?" is a moment that resonates with adults and kids alike, and the reminder that everything you need is already inside you is especially comforting when the world around you is uncertain.
