What's the Story?
When Addie Asante finds a strange package at her front door in THE SISTER SWITCH, she doesn't have time to read the note before slipping the beautiful bracelet on her wrist. She'd been frustrated with her family and tired of being the middle child always having to compromise, and without thinking makes a wish she's thought before: to not be the middle anymore. Suddenly she finds herself in the body of her older sister Sophie, the seemingly perfect student with her own room at home. Things are more complicated when Sophie is in the body of their younger sister Camille, who is now in the body of Addie. They have to find a way out of this mess while not getting into too much trouble at school or at home. Addie is also hoping to get everything back to normal in time for the talent show so she can sing with her friends and maybe, just maybe, win a free month of songwriting classes. But first the sisters have to work together, which hasn't been easy lately.
Is It Any Good?
The Asante sisters learn great lessons about empathy and gratitude when they discover that each of them has worries and hard things to deal with even when life looks easier from the outside. The Sister Switch forces the three girls to a new point of view, one that both forces them to see the world from another perspective and gives them the chance to appreciate the life they had. Authors Sarah Mlynowski and Debbie Rigaud give tender voice to each of the girls' frustrations which are so common: the youngest wants to be with the big kids, the oldest feels pressure to be a good example, and the middle is the compromising peacemaker. Families with any number of kids can see themselves in these roles and take time to think about what they like -- and dislike -- about their own situations.
