What's the Story?
Before the title page, a crate falls off a cargo ship during a storm at sea. When the crate washes ashore on an island inhabited by animals, and opens up, readers meet THE WILD ROBOT ON THE ISLAND. "This must be where I belong," she says. She realizes she must adapt and "become wild" to survive, so she observes what the animals do: how they move, hide, and communicate. She learns to speak their language so she can communicate with them. They had feared she was a monster. "I am not a monster," she tells them. "I am a robot. My name is Roz." She finds an orphaned goose egg, decides to raise him as her own, and names him Brightbill. He grows into a fine bird, and in the autumn, his "instincts were telling him to fly south for the winter." Roz tells him, "I will be here when you return in the spring." The story ends with Brightbill returning, and "mother and son were finally together again."
Is It Any Good?
This gentle, beautifully illustrated picture book is full of creatures (animals, birds, and one robot) getting along and helping one another out. The Wild Robot on the Island may not be as exciting as the action-packed, suspenseful Wild Robot novels or the animated film The Wild Robot, but it's perfect for younger readers and as an introduction to the characters of sweet, caring Roz and curious Brightbill.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what the robot Roz learns from the animals in The Wild Robot on the Island. What does she do to "become wild"? How does doing what they do help her survive?
Do you think you could survive on an island with no one like you around? What skills do you have that could help you survive on your own?
Roz perseveres and teams up with the animals to get by. Why are perseverance and teamwork important character strengths?
