What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Erin Entrada Kelly's Those Kids from Fawn Creek is a heartfelt tale about friendship, authenticity, and belonging. All of the Fawn Creek kids experience bullying throughout the story. The kids from Grand Saintlodge look down on the kids from Fawn Creek. Greyson's brother calls him "Gayson," and it's implied that other characters say "f--got" and call him "pretty boy." Kids call one of their classmates "Slowly" because he isn't intelligent. Boys punch a bullying kid, and a girl threatens to cut off another girl's hair. Mild insults include "loser," "stupid," "jerk," "doofus," "idiot," and "freak." An adult smokes a cigarette. Characters talk about their first kisses and crushes, hold hands, and dance. Characters demonstrate courage and integrity.

What's the Story?
There are never any surprises in Fawn Creek, Louisiana, until a mysterious new student named Orchid Mason arrives unannounced. And when Orchid joins Fawn Creek Middle School's seventh grade, the class' social scene -- the popular girls, the jocks, the "God Squad," the outcasts -- is thrown for a loop. Most of the seventh graders want to hear more about Orchid's tales of New York City, Paris, and Thailand, but some are skeptical and think that Orchid isn't telling the truth. Will any of THOSE KIDS FROM FAWN CREEK befriend Orchid?
Is It Any Good?
Erin Entrada Kelly's heartfelt tale about friendship, authenticity, and belonging is a must-read for kids. Kelly does a beautiful job depicting life in a small, rural town where everyone knows everyone and everything about them. Told from multiple perspectives, kids will see how Orchid's arrival causes Those Kids from Fawn Creek to think about how they treat others and question why things are always the same in their small town. As the Fawn Creek seventh graders learn to stand up to bullying kids, readers will understand the power of courage, kindness, and integrity and see the importance of staying true to themselves.
