What's the Story?
WHEN THE WORLD TIPS OVER tells the saga of the Fall family over the course of five generations. The newest generation of siblings Wynton, Miles, and Dizzy, named after their father's favorite jazz trumpeters, live on the family vineyard in Northern California's wine country. Wynton, 19, is a brilliant violinist who lights up any room he's in, but he's also well on a path to self-destruction with his hard-drinking lifestyle. Miles, 17, is called Perfect Miles because, well, he sure seems perfect to everyone he meets. But Miles is keeping secrets about some less-than-perfect things he's done. Dizzy, 12, mostly wants to be loved. All three are still struggling with their father's unexplained abandonment of the family 12 years ago. Into these lives comes a rainbow-haired girl, 19-year-old Cassidy, who's been living with her mom in an RV traveling all over Northern California. And when she rolls into town, well, the Fall family's world tips over.
Is It Any Good?
This is an absorbing, moving, sweeping family epic that shows how trauma and sorrow can be passed down from one generation to the next. When the World Tips Over is also steeped in magical realism that brings a fairy-tale feel to the mix. Author Jandy Nelson skillfully moves from one narrator to another and back and forth between generations at the same time, so that it's easy to keep the large cast of characters straight and to have a sense of place and time. This structure also keeps the pages turning and builds suspense about the mysterious origins of family secrets and trauma. Lots of teen appeal in the modern-day characters, and most of the past generations visited involve the characters when they were kids, teens, and young adults themselves. At over 500 pages, it's a big bite that offers a lot of food for thought about family, love, hate, sorrow, joy, and more.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the violence in When the World Tips Over. Is it too much? Is it realistic? Is reading it different from seeing it in movies, games, and other media?
What affect does alcohol and drug use have on the characters across the generations? Do you think recovery and change are possible for the modern-day characters?
The large cast of characters have a variety of character strengths and weaknesses. Do you have a favorite character, or one you identify with? If so, what do you like best about them?
