What’s It About?
BIG RUMBLE BOXING: CREED CHAMPIONS is the second collaboration between Survios and MGM Studios, now bringing the intensity of professional boxing to multiple console and computer platforms. While they're not all available to start, you get to fight as or against one of 18 boxers from both the Rocky and Creed movie franchises, including Apollo “The Power of Punch” Creed and Adonis “Hollywood” Creed, Clubber Lang, Viktor Drago, and of course, Rocky “The Italian Stallion” Balboa. Each fighter has a different backstory, fighting style, and special move. Unlocked from the start, Leo “The Lion” Sporino is one of the quickest fighters in the game, for example, and can chain combos together efficiently. But Ivan Drago, unlocked through Versus mode, is the tallest fighter and packs a powerful punch. (All fighters fall into one of three boxing styles: General, Slugger, and Swarmer.) Along with the main Arcade mode, there's Versus (local head-to-head multiplayer matches) and a Training mode, which includes classic montage scenes from the films (in a gym, punching sides of beef, working the bag, and other mini-games in different locations). Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions is more of an arcade game than a realistic simulation. Once you've chosen a fighter and a game mode, you'll use a combination of the face buttons for different kinds of punches, and offensive and defensive body moves when simultaneously pressing the analog stick or d-pad in a given direction. The tutorial teaches the core mechanics, but you'll begin to discover unique qualities with the fighters to gain an edge over an opponent in the ring.
Is It Any Good?
As arcade boxers go, this is a fun game -- especially for fans of the Rocky and Creed movies they're based on. While not a complete KO, Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions is an accessible and relatively affordable multi-platform game that delivers a solid punch. It straddles the line between being a pick-up-and-play arcade game while still offering plenty of depth. Combos can be chained together with some practice, and the button layout is intuitive and easy to remember while in the midst of a heated skirmish. Adding to the arcade feel of the game is the Super Move, which is unique for each character. When timed just right, you can perform a powerful attack to lay your opponent flat. The storylines are a good way to keep players engaged, but the developers could have done more to flesh out the narrative. Many of the characters only have text-based dialog, and the soundalikes aren't that great (probably because Survios couldn't score the rights to use the original actor's voices or hire them to read new lines). As a result, the story-based experience varies greatly depending on whom you're playing as.
The graphics are decent. though, with characters that look somewhat like their real counterparts on the silver screen (and will get sweaty and bruised over time), but with a more exaggerated physique, including huge muscles. The animation is also smooth, between the fighting moves and when they wobble and pass out on the mat. The sound effects are good, and some music will be familiar to fans of the movies, such as the iconic “Gonna Fly Now,” but it's missing other anthems, including Survivor's “Eye of the Tiger.” There could also be more modes to indulge in (like online multiplayer) but there's enough meat here between the Arcade (single-player gaming), Training mini-games, and local head-to-head battles om the same TV or computer. Overall, Big Rumble Boxing: Creed Champions is a really fun arcade-style boxing game worth stepping into the ring with.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about whether these characters are positive role models or not. Can a character be both a positive and negative role model at the same time, or it's in the eye of the beholder? Would you apply that to professional athletes who demonstrate bravery and determination, even if their primary goal is to knock out their opponent by punching them in the head?
Does this game rely too heavily on the franchise it's based upon or does the gameplay itself have any real merit? That is, would someone play this without the familiar Rocky theme?
