Borderlands 2 is not a bad game! Read this before you tell your kids no!
My kid made me put this in here.
IF YOU WANT A SOLUTION TO GORE READ THIS!!!
Hello parents! I see you have come to see what other parents think of this game! I am a parent of a 14 year old son and a 12 year old daughter, and I am absolutely fine with both of them playing it. Now yes I agree with you that it is a violent game, but there are many solutions to it!
Primarily, just turn off gore! Easy enough to do, just go into the pause menu, settings, gameplay settings, and set "Censor gore" to yes. This will remove a majority of gore and blood, with the exception being the blood splatter on your screen, and the very slight blood from headshots, along with cutscenes which can get quite graphic (Read below for list of graphic cutscenes). There is no denying that you are killing things, but I put extreme emphasis on things, not once during this game did I feel like I was killing another human, it was more of strange humanoids called bandits, or robots, or just random beasts, the only thing remotely close to a human killing was the 2nd to last boss battle, in which you killed the antagonist of the story "Handsome Jack" but at that point, you really dont feel bad about killing him because he is a very mean person.
Turning off gore also turns off all language, which was not anything like F*** or S***, it was a lot more of things like "Son of a b***h" or "He was crying like a Jacka**", Nothing really offensive.
On the front of drinking, smoking, and drugs, there is almost none. The sniper Mordecai drinks a little bit, but that is only twice. The fighter brick smokes once, but that is also it. For drugs, the more protective parents may think that Lilith using Eridium is a drug addiction, but its not, that is her only way to stay powerful, its not an addiction, even though she does say "I need a pick me up"
When it comes to sex, there is one character that is mildly provocative, her name is Moxxi, she owns a bar in the main hub area, and makes quite a few innuendos. She also has a slightly revealing top, but nothing that you should be alarmed about. There are a few 'dirty' magazines scattered around the game, but nothing revealing, there is no actual nudity or sex in this game, just lots, and lots of innuendos.
The good message is basically that you, a normal treasure hunter, can do amazing things if you work with a team. Good overcomes evil yada yada ya...
If you have kids, and you dont want them to see gore, follow these steps
1. Turn off gore in settings (Explained above)
2. Be aware that the following cutscenes are particularly gory
The opening cutscene, easy to skip, just click (if the game is ready to load)
The cutscene in which Ellie is introduced, a car with a bandit in it is crushed, gore is not censored and blood goes everywhere. To skip this, when your kid entered the dust, make sure you control the game, go to where the game wants you to go, and then put screen down until you hear "Oh hi there! Scooter told me you was a comin!" at which point you should be fine!
The cutscene in which Tiny Tina is introduced, she is prancing around a bandit, and after 10 seconds or so she blows him up, again blood goes everywhere. To prevent this, just take the laptop when you here "All around the stratus plant", and give it back when you here "Oh hi!!!".
THESE NEXT SCENES CONTAIN SPOILERS
The boss battle in which bloodwing is killed. His head is blown off, so just have your kid look away after the battle, just have them go to the next area.
The scene in which Roland (Leader) is shot, a bullet goes straight through his chest and blood again... goes everywhere. When the fight at "Control core angel" is over, just take the laptop from your kid, when they get teleported to a storeroom, you should be fine.
The scene after the Handsome Jack battle is particularly graphic, Jack is bleeding from many different places, and falls over wounded.
DLC Reviews (DLC is downloadable content), These are all I have played myself.
Tiny Tina's assault on dragon keep(9.99$): Great DLC, teaches a Really good lesson about loss, and suffering a loss. I have played through the entire DLC and this is without a doubt my favorite DLC. It is controlled by the girl Tina, a hyperactive kid, its really fun
Capitan Scarlett and her Pirates Booty(9.99$): Also amazing DLC, doesnt teach a lesson but is very beautiful graphically. Only violence is against giant worms, and a huge beast called the leviathan, among other things. Although it has the word booty in it, it is not highly sexual, at all. It is almost essential to have, very fun story.
Raid On Digistruct Peak(4.99$): Great for, believe it or not, math. Once you get high up enough in the game numbers become a big part. If a robot has 10 million health and you have a gun with 100 bullets doing 25000 damage a piece, and your grenades do 1 million damage a hit, how many grenades will you need to kill.
Things not to get/do
Watch or have your parents/kids watch the Psycho intro trailer "A meat bicycle built for two" as it is the most graphic thing of the whole game. Kreig is a fun character to play, but lots of gore comes with him, the trailer shows that. Dont watch it
Watching the Roland death scene online, those are usually at the best graphics and look much worse (gore wise) than the game itself.
All in all I would say it is a very overdramaticized game. Its a great game to play, and decently appropriate
