What’s It About?
It's time to return to the heyday of the arcade with CAPCOM ARCADE 2ND STADIUM. This new collection features two decades of Capcom arcade hits, from 1984's side-scrolling platformer SonSon to 2004's Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition, and with 30 more classic titles packed in between. This arcade archive features the original ROMs of both English and Japanese releases, re-creating the look and feel of each title to the point that you'll find yourself trying to drop a coin into your console or computer. These retro classics also come with some modern tricks, such as saving and loading a game at any point, speeding and slowing the action on the fly, and even rewinding the gameplay to correct any ill-timed mistakes. Players can also compete in both Score and Timed Challenges, posting their highest scores against others from around the globe. And if that's not enough, there are also Special Challenges that change up the gameplay in other unique ways, such as playing with an inverted screen for added difficulty. It's all the fun you could ask for in an arcade experience without ever having to leave the comfort of your couch.
Is It Any Good?
The 2021 release of Capcom Arcade Stadium gave gamers a chance to revisit 32 of Capcom's classic titles from its arcade heyday. That was just the beginning, though, as Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium pulls another 32 titles from the company's roughly four decades of arcade hits. The sequel doesn't do much to differentiate itself from its predecessor, carrying over the same look, the same interface, and the same features from the first Stadium. That includes adjustable game speeds, saving and loading on the fly, and even rewinding the gameplay to get a second chance at a missed opportunity. In fact, Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium could just as easily have been released as an expansion to the original Stadium and none would be the wiser. This isn't a bad thing, though, as the first collection was near perfect, and releasing this as a new batch keeps players from having to sort through more than 60 different titles.
While the fundamental elements of Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium are the same as in the first release, it's the new selection of games that makes this collection truly shine. Fighting game fans will relish the inclusion of three games from the Darkstalkers series, five from the Street Fighter series, and even extra-cute fan favorites, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix. Mega Man fans will also be happy to see both of the Blue Bomber's arcade outings in this mix. That's not to say there aren't a few head scratching additions to the lineup, but the collection is filled with more hits than misses by far. Even the lesser known titles like the quirky puzzle game Pnickies manage to have an oddly addictive quality that make them hard to put down. Whether you're taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane or are being introduced to these arcade classics for the very first time, Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium delivers a retro experience that gamers of any age will appreciate.
