The best Destiny has been in years
This is the best Destiny expansion we've had since The Taken King. After my particularly scathing review of Beyond Light, I had no expectations for The Witch Queen whatsoever. I watched the showcase for it and was genuinely blown away. The number of mysteries and loose ends we've been chasing for 8 years are finally coming together, and we have the best villain in Destiny history, Savathun. The expansion's story can't even be talked about without potentially ruining some threads, so i'll just say its coherent and is the best Bungie has been since Halo 3. The seasonal content isn't a rip off like with the first half of Beyond Light's seasons, and Season of the Risen lived up to expectations. There are so many new weapons to collect, triumphs to gild, and challenges and quests to complete. There is also the Throne World area, which has many secrets and its own reputation system where you can complete activities to unlock more areas of the world. The Wellspring is a fun activity, despite the underwhelming rewards (looking at you, Exotic glaives). Speaking of glaives, the new archetype is fun in some instances but is not viable in high-end content. Definitely build around different archetypes in Legend/Master level activities. We are currently in Season of the Haunted, which aims to tie up narrative threads with Caiatl, Zavala, and Crow. It looks to be a very emotional season, and the first episode with Crow did not disappoint. I like how Bungie leaned into a horror setting for the expansion and Season 17, and I am very excited for the new dungeons we're going to get. The new raid, Vow of the Disciple, or as I like to call it Don't Skip Leg Day, has new and innovative mechanics and is a lot of fun. All in all, there is still some work to do as far as Quality of Life and loot pools go, but The Witch Queen is definitely worth the $40 ($80 Deluxe) asking price.
