What’s It About?
JELLYCAR WORLDS is a driving and platforming hybrid that offers physics-based gameplay. You're challenged to drive a "soft body" car -- presumably filled with jelly -- and safely make it to the end of the levels. You'll navigate the moving environment, avoiding obstacles and deadly chasms, and use the vehicle's various power-ups (abilities), such as grow, sticky tires, rocket, and more. On the iPhone and iPad versions, you'll drive in a given direction and turn the device around to center your gravity. The game's divided into multiple worlds, each with a different theme. You can unlock new content, design your own car if you like (and earn new brushes and stencils), and even record your own sound effects to replace the existing silly ones. Visually, the game looks like a "flip book," plus you can unlock new flip book animated videos to watch after completing levels.
Is It Any Good?
This platformer is fun and silly, and has a retro look that should appeal to many -- but it's also quite challenging. Don't be fooled by JellyCar Worlds' "flip book" animation and zany spoken sound effects (yes, all verbally delivered, like someone saying "boing!" or "whooosh"!), because this sequel can be tough to beat. The charm of the game is your malleable car that squishes between gears, bounces off girders, and dives down contraptions. The power-ups are fun to use, too, such as a helium balloon that drifts you upwards to reach another part of the level. There are six main levels, plus two bonus ones (seven and eight), a time trial mode, and mini-games, too (like "long jump"). You'll also want to go back and complete the same worlds again with your newly found power-ups to see if you can complete the world in a different way and beat your best time. There are also secret exits and collectibles per level. Being able to design your car and create new sound effects using your voice is a great addition.
While there's no inappropriate content, younger players may have a problem trying to control this game and succeed in finishing the levels because of the loose, bouncy "jelly" physics. Your car will flip around in circles as you try to steady the world (by rotating the iPhone or iPad), and gain enough speed to soar over a small canyon. But you'll likely need to study the level to find the simplest solution to complete the puzzle. The Apple TV and Mac version relies solely on wireless controller buttons to drive your jelly car. Just pack some patience. There will be lots of trial and error, in other words, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for gamers who enjoy a tougher platformer. Whether you've played previous JellyCar games or are new to the franchise, JellyCar Worlds is a cute but sometimes difficult game to test drive.
