A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this game.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about math by exploring charts, estimation, numbers, shapes, graphs, and sorting. The content begins at an introductory level, depending on the age of the child, and increases in difficulty. Kids help out all of Hello Kitty's friends and shopkeepers as they prepare, select, and box customer orders. They learn to estimate the right box size for baked treats, catch the correct ice cream scoops, use a chart to choose the right cakes and cookies, and sort pasta into the proper bins. These tantalizing sweets create a fun backdrop for learning important math skills.

Positive Messages

Kids are encouraged to be good helpers, be friendly to others, and help customers.

Positive Role Models & Representations

Hello Kitty is always kind to friends and works hard to make her parents proud of her.

Ease of Play

The controls are easy to understand, but they aren't always as responsive as they could be.

Violence & Scariness
Language
Consumerism

Hello Kitty is part of a larger consumer franchise with a wide range of products.

What's it about?

In LEAPFROG EXPLORER LEARNING GAME: HELLO KITTY: SWEET LITTLE SHOPS, Hello Kitty spends a week helping out shopkeepers and customers with math-related tasks. The shop specialties include ice cream, flowers, bakery, fruit, pasta, and cheese. She needs to estimate the proper boxes to hold her treats, sort groceries by color and shape, estimate the number of items in a group, collect specific numbered items, and fill orders based on a customer chart. She can also visit the photo booth to take and decorate a picture; the sample table to graph the favorite treats of the day; and the jelly bean station to estimate the number of jelly beans in a jar. Each day of Hello Kitty's week has a different theme, such as sports or flowers. Kids earn stickers for the photo booth each time they help a shopkeeper in need, and they add hearts to their heart meters for helping. Creative kids also will enjoy customizing signs for each of the shops.

Is it any good?

LeapFrog Explorer Learning Game: Hello Kitty: Sweet Little Shops is an engaging way to help kids understand estimation, sorting, graphing, and charts. There are a lot of different shops for kids to visit and other activities to discover along the way, so kids won't quickly get bored. A nice feature is that the difficulty within the activities levels up based on how kids play, so the game continues to present a challenge. This is a fun, solid choice with a good range of content.
