What parents need to know

Parents need to know that NFL Training Camp is a fitness program that uses isotonic and isometric exercises presented with a professional football theme. Training can be performed by two players, but the box only comes with one set of monitors and one rubber band (used for resistance exercises), so that if you want to exercise with another, you must buy another set of the equipment. Single fitness sessions, customized workouts, and a 60-day challenge can all be tailored by the individual user. The game can also be used with a Wii Balance Board

What's it about?

NFL TRAINING CAMP is a fitness program developed for the Wii that allows users to work various areas of the body and train alongside virtual NFL players. Users can train upper body, lower body, body core, or participate in drills linked to positions on a football field. There are several ways to set up an exercise routine and the routines can last in length from a few minutes to 30-plus minutes, depending on the number of exercises involved and the pace of the user. The boxed set comes with a heart-rate monitor, a motion sensor for the leg, as well as a rubber band for the resistance fitness exercises. The game will monitor fitness on several levels. Players earn points by doing the fitness routines, which can be spent in the Pro Shop to outfit in-game characters with gear from NFL teams.

Is it any good?

NFL Training Camp may have an NFL spin, but it is a viable aerobic exercise program that uses resistance and isometric and isotonic exercises to produce an aerobic workout targeting different muscle areas. Though there are some challenges tailored to different football positions, like a quarterback challenge that will have user throwing an air football at targets or a placekicker challenge where players boot field goals, all of the exercises are invigorating, will induce a little sweat, and increase your heart rate. As with any exercise program, players should not just jump in and try for a lengthy routine without first working up to it. By associating some exercises to specific NFL positions, kids may find doing this program more fun than doing a straight-out exercise program. However, it is also a decently scaled fitness routine. The graphics and audio portions are pretty good, but the real joys are the health benefits and how the game tracks player fitness on a number of levels.

Online interaction: Players can set up workout groups with family and friends and then chart the progress of those in their groups. This is accomplished through connection to the EA servers. There is no direct communication, and only family or friends can be involved in the groups.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the importance of maintaining a level of physical fitness both for boys and for girls.

  • They can discuss how committing to anything, including a fitness routine, establishes solid habits and helps one to achieve goals. Do fitness games like this one make it easier to commit?

  • Why it is important to be healthy?  How healthy food habits help in addition to working out?
