What parents need to know

Positive messages

There is a very brief and incidental 'story' in the Pac-Man game in which Pac-Man and the ghosts constantly chase each other. This story is displayed in short, silent vignettes in between levels.

Positive role models

In the animated Pac-Man vignettes, Pac-Man chases and taunts the ghosts.

Ease of play

These classic arcade games were designed with the mantra of being simple to play but difficult, nearly impossible, to master. Because they require very simple navigation controls and single button presses, almost anyone can pick up and play it, but only those who practice and play over and over will be able to rack up a huge score.

Violence & scariness

In the Galaga section of this game, players shoot down enemy creatures, but everything is presented in an old-school, abstract design. There is a modern-day remake of the game which makes the enemies look more organic and increases the frenetic pace, colorful explosions, and pounding sound effects, but it remains in the spirit of the classic decades-old arcade game.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions is a 3D version of the two classic arcade games listed in the title. In addition to remastering the original games in a 3D presentation, these games have been remastered to reflect modern-day  graphics and processing power. The Galaga games involve shooting down enemy creatures but the violence has little impact because of the abstract visual style.

What's it about?

PAC-MAN AND GALAGA DIMENSIONS brings two of the most heralded arcade games of all time in 3D for the first time. In Pac-Man, players move a yellow circle-shaped character through labyrinth-like mazes in order to collect all the dots within each maze. In Galaga, players pilot a tiny spaceship that must shoot down even tinier creatures and objects, all of which are aligned in perfect, orderly columns. The games are all about repeating simple controls over and over to achieve the highest score possible, but because of the accessible gameplay and the addicting feeling that it's always possible to do better next time, players can spend hours without getting bored.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions is a faithful recreation of the classic arcade titles Pac-Man and Galaga. Although these iconic games have been remade and re-released countless times over the years, this is the first time they have been made in 3D. The new visual style adds excitement and a new vibe to the experience, which is augmented by the completely remade versions of each title as well. The concepts are simple, but the always looming quest for a higher score means they never get old, and it's hard to find two games that fit that mold better than the ones in this compilation.

  • Families can talk about the shooting aspect of the Galaga games. How would you describe the violence in this title?
