Super Mario Party Jamboree
What's It About?
SUPER MARIO PARTY JAMBOREE will be very familiar to anyone who has played previous games in the series. It's a party game meant for between one and four players locally, and up to 20 when playing online. The main mode includes seven board game-style maps, ranging from a racetrack to an archipelago near a goomba-shaped volcano. Players take turns rolling digital dice and moving from space to space along the board, trying to find and purchase stars that appear in random places. After each player has had a turn, they all compete in one of more than 110 mini-games in hopes of earning coins (used to purchase stars and power-up items). The mini-games—which players can practice beforehand—include races, last-one-in-the-ring brawls, memory challenges, motion-controlled games, and more. Over the course of the game, players will have chances to gain Jamboree allies, a computer-controlled character who will tag along with the player's avatar, offering bonuses in the form of extra dice throws, mini-game advantages, and increased star purchasing power. Additional local play modes include Rhythm Kitchen, which collects rhythm-based motion-control games that involve movements such as chopping and skewering; a freeform mini-game mode that lets players pick and play the mini-games they like most; and Toad's Item Factory, which has players working machinery cooperatively to keep production moving. Players can also hop online in Bowser Kaboom Squad, a game that tasks teams of up to eight players with taking down a giant AI Bowser with bombs, as well as Koopathon, a 20-player mini-game marathon.
Is It Any Good?
This is the first game in Nintendo's decades-old party game series to include the word "super" in the title, and it's well deserved. Super Mario Party Jamboree has a huge selection of play modes designed to fit every social gaming situation, whether you want to play locally with friends and family, online with friends or strangers, or a mix of the two, with players both on the couch beside you and in their own homes around the globe. More than that, it's designed to let players tailor the experience to their preferences like never before. While setting up the game, players can assign handicaps to less experienced players, letting them start with an extra star or two to give them a chance, as well as specify whether they want motion-controlled mini-games to be included. And a new Pro mode for more experienced players removes elements of luck from the game by revealing the criteria for endgame bonus stars before the game begins, letting players vote on which mini-games to play, and eliminating random wheel spins for negative Bowser effects.
Of course, what makes or breaks any party game is the quality of its mini-games, and Jamboree's are diverse and generally a lot of fun. There are plenty of traditional Mario Party mini-games, like trying to stay on an icy platform as clouds do their best to blow you off, and jumping between slices of bread without getting squished in a grid of sandwiches being stacked ever higher. But there are also some more innovative games, such as batting pieces of fruit into a parfait glass with a spoon, a Splatoon-inspired ink stamping game, and Yoshi-back races up mountains covered in platforms and pits. The occasional mini-game falls flat, like a race in which you simply need to push through a field of marbles to reach the finish line, but they're all very short, so the disappointment is usually fleeting. Families searching for a fun video game that parents, kids, and friends can all play together, regardless of age or experience level, will have a tough time topping Super Mario Party Jamboree.
