A Bit of Light
What's the Story?
In A BIT OF LIGHT, Ella (Anna Paquin) is forced to move back in with her father, Alan (Ray Winstone), while she tries to stay sober after temporarily losing custody of her kids to her ex-husband, Joseph (Youssef Kerkour). As she nostalgically hangs out in the park where she used to take her girls, she meets 13-year-old Neil (Luca Hogan), who seems determined to help her through.
Is It Any Good?
British director Stephen Moyer has previously worked with his wife, Paquin, in True Blood, The Parting Glass, and Flack, and here pulls another great performance from the Canadian star. A Bit of Light isn't an easy watch by any means. It's heart-wrenching to see Ella's struggles to stay sober and find hope, but Winstone's turn as her patient, frustrated, but ultimately loving father injects much-needed warmth into her journey. Ella's relationship with 13-year-old Neil is certainly odd, and his too-wise-for-his years performance gives a sense of magical realism potentially hovering in the wings of this stage-to-screen adaptation. It feels so clearly like a dramatic device at times that it temporarily pulls you from the story. But whether or not Neil is fully of the same reality, there's a sense of hope and contentment that comes with suspecting Ella has someone watching over her that sees her for who she is and, perhaps more importantly, who she can be.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how alcoholism was portrayed in A Bit of Light. What did we learn about the consequences of Ella's addiction? How was her experience portrayed? How did people around her treat her? Where might you turn if you were concerned about addiction affecting someone in your life?
Discuss Ella's relationship with Neil. Did you find it strange? What role did Neil come to play in Ella's life?
Talk about the strong language used in the movie. What did it contribute to the story? Is a certain level of language expected in a film like this? If so, why?
The film was adapted from a play. Is there anything that stands out as a production that has gone from stage to screen? Do you think it translates well to the screen? How did it compare to other adaptations you've seen?
