What's the Story?

Like many holiday films, A HEART FOR CHRISTMAS explores the importance of family above all else. After a mom's deliberate disappearance from her ex-husband's and baby's lives years before, the family must cope with the disruption her return causes. Johnathan (director/co-writer Maurice Hall) is now embarking on a promising new relationship with Danielle (Nikiva Dionne), a caring orthopedic surgeon. He's justifiably angry that his ex Stephanie (Taja V. Simpson) returns to his home unannounced. Seven-year-old daughter Kennedy (Sydney Reese Hall) is thrilled—she wanted a mom for Christmas. But Stephanie, who in the ensuing years achieved fame as a movie action hero called Scarlett Gray, now expects to move back in as if nothing happened.

This holiday romance is well-meaning but on the low-quality end of the usual holiday/family fare. It's hard to imagine a man allowing the ex who disappeared shortly after their daughter's birth to just waltz back into their lives unannounced, not just to his daughter's life, but to his house, his dinner table, and bed. Where are the lawyers? How can Stephanie justify her radio silence for seven years then suddenly show up at the door and expect to be welcomed? And, weirdly, there's no indication that the daughter was ever told who her mother is (a famous actress!), why she left, where she's been all these years, or why, despite wealth and mobility, she has never been in touch. This feels like a major deficiency in her father's parenting and/or the movie's believability.

As we await the inevitable uniting of nice guy Johnathan and nice woman Danielle, Danielle has also been making questionable decisions, allowing the creepy ex who canceled their marriage at the last minute back into her life. Overall, it feels like the writers who crafted the script are unfamiliar with human behavior.

  • Mom Stephanie has been enjoying success, fame, and wealth during the many years she's been away, yet she never got in contact, not for birthdays, not for holidays. Do you think it's realistic that she was welcomed back with open arms? Why or what not?

  • People are neither all good nor all bad. What are some good qualities Stephanie has? Do you think she learns any lessons?
