Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In A LITTLE PRAYER, Bill (David Strathairn) and his wife, Venida (Celia Weston), are surprised when their daughter, Patti (Anna Camp), moves back home with her young daughter (Billie Roy) in tow. Meanwhile, Bill becomes aware of trouble in the marriage of his son, David (Will Pullen), and tries to protect his beloved daughter-in-law, Tammy (Jane Levy).
Is It Any Good?
Quiet and affecting, this slice-of-life drama is likely going to be most appreciated by older parents and grandparents. That's because A Little Prayer is about the patriarch of a middle-class family who sees that his adult children are making consequential life mistakes and is trying to figure out his role in helping them. Bill is a small-business owner who probably should have retired a decade earlier but knows in his heart of hearts that his son isn't quite ready to take over the family business. Moreover, his son and daughter, both in their 30s, aren't the people he'd hoped they'd grow up to be. He wonders, as their father, is he to blame? And what can he do to help them get their lives together now?
Set in writer-director Angus MacLachlan's hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, A Little Prayer offers a nuanced portrayal of heartland Americans. Bill and David are both veterans and together run the family sheet metal business, where they treat their employees to a weekly happy hour at the VFW. The women in the family work at Target and CVS and as a walking tour guide at the Old Salem Museum. In his 70s, Bill goes to more funerals than is comfortable, and talk of his days in Vietnam is peppered throughout, organically. The problems his kids are facing are serious but not uncommon. It's all so very real, and it all makes Bill's feelings of helplessness very relatable to parents of adult children.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how, in A Little Prayer, Bill is trying to figure out how and when to get involved in his adult children's struggles. Is there an age or stage at which offspring just need to figure stuff out for themselves? Or is it a parent's role to offer guidance at any age? Do you think David and Patti rely too much on their parents, or do you think it's good to know your parents have your back in times of trouble?
Do you think the movie's characters are authentically represented? If so, why? Compare them to other Southern characters in movies and TV shows. The writer-director is from the area where the story takes placeādo you think that helped him craft a better story?
What's the meaning of the term "kindred spirits"? Is there someone in your life you'd describe that way?
Is drinking glamorized here? Why, or why not? Are there realistic consequences?
What do you think will happen to David, Tammy, Patti, and Hadley in the years to come?
